Mrs. Bond and Mrs. Sterchele’s fourth-grade social studies classes at Petway Elementary School had an opportunity to explore artifacts. Students communicated with their peers in groups as social scientists to closely examine artifacts ranging from globes, hand-carved statues, pottery, maps, arrowheads, coins, and other historical items. Students were tasked with constructing questions based on the four social sciences: history, geography, civics, and economics. This engaging lesson inspired the students to think creatively and critically.

Mrs. Gancarz and Mrs. Nees' fourth-grade class at Mennies Elementary School is hard at work during math centers, where students practice responsibility and teamwork as they collaborate on math activities.

On Friday, September 20th, the VHS South art classes (Mrs. Friedley, Mrs. Parent, Mrs. Carberry, and Mrs. Medio) celebrated World Peace Day by participating in an international project called Pinwheels for Peace. Schools and organizations create pinwheels with words and images that represent peace. The students also created chalk art with peaceful messages and images. This project collaboration allowed students an opportunity to show what peace means to them and to participate in a global movement.

Students in Mrs. Fiocchi's 4th grade class at Durand Elementary School have been busy learning about character. Students picked a character trait to describe themselves and cited proof of how they are that trait. This project was a reminder that her students are all a part of her classroom family and each has unique traits.
Students also listened to the story “The Best Part of Me” about fourth-grade students who picked the part/feature about them they liked best. They chose their own best part and wrote a paragraph describing the part, explaining why it is their favorite part, who it reminded them of (where they got it from, for example, mom or dad), and lastly, how this feature can be helpful to others. Mrs. Fiocchi loves photography and truly enjoyed taking pictures of her students and turning them into art!

Students in Ms. Greenfield's Jaguar Period at Johnstone School participated in several Team Building activities that were engaging and fun for all while strengthening communication skills and fostering collaboration and teamwork! On Wednesday, students tackled the Lost At Sea challenge which had groups of students come together to rate 15 items that could be most helpful in an emergency. Students then viewed what experts rated these items to see how close or far they were in their ratings. Thursday, groups of students were given ten pipe cleaners to create the tallest free-standing structure within a certain time. The tallest structure built by a group was 17 cm tall. To finish the week, students chose one group member to assemble a 24-piece puzzle. The challenge in the task was that this student was blindfolded and had to listen to directions given to them by their group members to complete the puzzle. No other members could touch the puzzle pieces as well. The discussions that occurred during these activities were fantastic!

Students in Mrs. Smalley's class at D'Ippolito Elementary School had to "Save Fred." The purpose of the activity was to aid students in learning how to speak and listen to each other, what teamwork is, and how to be equal participants, write predictions, reflect on the outcome, and accept that things may not always work the first time.

Welcome to the Biscoglio Bistro and DeRenzis’ Diner! Last week, 5th-grade students at D'Ippolito Elementary School “tasted” mentor texts as a preview of the books they will be reading this year. The diners dined on different genres present throughout our HMH reading series, Multicultural Rising Voices library, and mentor texts used for literacy and writing. They had a great time dining, chatting, and learning from each other!
Some students were quoted saying…
“I could look at these books all day long!”

Students in Ms. Vega's class at Sabater Elementary School took part in a cooperative activity in which students practiced some important skills used in the classroom. Working together, students must rescue Fred, our worm, turn his boat right side up (plastic cup), and put on his life preserver (lifesaver gummy), all without hurting Fred or dropping him into the “lake” and only using four paper clips. This activity allows the kids to learn how to work with others, problem-solving, communication, fine motor skills, and have fun together.

Mennies School kicked off the year by celebrating their first character trait, resilience! Students wore green and engaged in discussions about the importance of resilience throughout the day, learning valuable lessons on how to stay strong and persevere.

The job is never done for VHS AFJROTC throughout the summer. The JROTC color guard displayed colors at a total of four events. Their color guard kicked it off with the Puerto Rican Parade on July 28th, moving from Landis Ave, in front of the VA building, to Landis Park, where they presented the colors in front of the stage. VHS had a freshmen orientation on August 14th and 15th, in which cadets assisted incoming students in finding their way around the Dennis Tanner building and their classes. Additionally, cadets were stationed at a table to speak with parents and children about the program and its benefits. On August 20th, the 150th anniversary of VHS was held by the Historical Society at the VHS South Auditorium. JROTC cadets assembled a table to showcase the program and engage with community members. Last, on August 31st, former cadets Deviyanni Saez and Leriam Vasquez organized a back-to-school drive at Stewarts to cap off the summer. To assist families in getting their children prepared for the upcoming school year by providing backpacks full of school supplies. This event provided a bouncy house, face painting, princesses, and Stewart's new playground for the children so they could enjoy their last few days of summer. Many families arrived, and every backpack containing goods was distributed.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Vineland Public Schools proudly celebrates the vibrant culture, history, and countless contributions of Hispanic communities, which have shaped our nation and district.
Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we highlight how our schools are honoring this important month.

Mrs. Evans & Ms. Espinosa’s 7th grade classes at Wallace Middle School have been investigating what happens when a bath bomb is added to water and what causes it to happen. Students observed different kinds of bath bombs, established shared norms, and discussed related phenomena.

Mr. Bechtel’s Geometry classes at Vineland High School explored their knowledge of Points, Lines, and Planes by building three-dimensional models. This hands-on project allowed students to visualize and apply their knowledge in a tangible way, laying the groundwork for exploring more abstract geometric ideas.

Ms. Muller and Ms. Messore's 3rd-grade classroom at Barse Elementary School was transformed into a delightful book café where students got to sample a variety of literary “flavors”! As students got a "taste" of different genres of stories, they recorded their top choices onto their book menu to read when visiting the classroom library 🍎📖

In 7th grade science at Johnstone School, students began investigating their first unit phenomenon, which focuses on chemistry and matter. Students began to build from vocabulary and concepts taught in 6th grade and are starting to make connections. We are investigating store-bought bath bombs versus homemade bath bombs to see if they both have similar outcomes when placed in water. We will center our investigation on this topic for the first lesson.
