Students from the RISE (Reaching Independence through Structured Experiences) program began their work-based learning experiences on Monday, September 9, 2024, with the reopening of the Together Cafe at Rowan College of South Jersey’s Cumberland campus. The Together Cafe is a collaborative effort between the Adult Center for Transition (ACT) program at RCSJ and the RISE program from VHS. The cafe offers a variety of food and beverages for breakfast and lunch, prepared by our students with the assistance of Sodexo, our district food service provider. College students can visit the Together Cafe for a quick bite to eat, including sandwiches, salads, wraps, snacks, bagels, and beverages. Both ACT and RISE students are responsible for assembling and packaging food, stocking shelves with products, cleaning and maintaining the lobby area, and working at the cash register. This experience provides our students with hands-on learning opportunities where they can learn from their mistakes and celebrate their successes!

Students in Stefanie Super’s 7th grade Language Arts class at Pilla Middle School worked on a brainstorming activity to kick off the school year. Using the first Portrait of a Graduate trait, “responsibility,” as inspiration, the students used their Panther Period to brainstorm areas of life in which they feel different responsibilities. They used one color marker to write down what they're responsible for as a student, and responsibilities at home were written in a different color. They used a third marker to write down ways to deal with stress and time management. Students discussed how "filled" their "plates" were and starred and circled things they wanted to prioritize and some things they could let go. The class also discussed distractions like social media, technology, and other negative things that we tend to prioritize. From there, they shared ideas on how to cut back on distractions to be more responsible, how not to let social media take away our joy, and how to take responsibility for ourselves without blaming others.
“It was a three-day lesson they loved and felt was extremely valuable,” Super said.

On Tuesday, September 10th, 2024, Rossi had its kickoff WISE Assembly! All the traits were introduced and discussed! Mrs. Lisa Hampton-Trzeciak was our SUPERHERO and discussed the importance of Responsibility! Our new beautiful red WISE shirts were introduced, and the children now understand how we will soon have a “Sea of Red.” Hootie got the crowd riled up and was a hit, as always! Students and staff can’t wait to start the program and see who the first winners are for Responsibility!

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Cunningham Academy on October 11!

Mrs. Gaetano and Mrs. Uebelacker's 5th grade math classes hit the ground running by collaborating in small, random groups and working on non-permanent surfaces. Each group had to work together to complete their tasks before moving on, while the teachers circulated the room to assist. The students were eager and excited to tackle their math challenges!

Reminder for Cunningham students!

Today, we remember the heroes and honor the lives lost on 9/11. United in resilience, hope, and remembrance.

We would love to feature these special moments on our school's social media channels and website to celebrate the occasion with our entire school community. We had such an enthusiastic response last year that we wanted to bring it back!
For those who wish to participate, please share your child's first day of school photos with our district's social media coordinator. We believe these photos can inspire and uplift our school community while showcasing our students’ enthusiasm and positive spirit. This is open to students at any level!

Deadline: Kindly submit your photos by Friday, September 6, to ensure they can be featured promptly. Photos may be shared periodically throughout the first few days of school based on the order they are received.
Please also remember to keep photos positive and appropriate for the school setting. Ensure that anyone appearing in the photos is dressed appropriately. Avoid any gestures or poses that may be considered offensive or inappropriate. We are not looking for summer/vacation photos or unrelated photos. The district retains the right not to use photos that do not meet this criteria.
We are excited to create a positive first-day experience for all our students, and your participation in this endeavor is greatly appreciated. Let's make this year's first day of school memorable and inspiring for everyone!
