In Mrs. Bonsall and Mrs. Stanker's 6th-grade classes at Johnstone School, students participated in a Portrait of a Graduate empathy activity. Students watched a video titled 'Don't Put People in Boxes' and engaged in a classroom conversation in which they shared various things about themselves. They started with "if you really knew me..." and told lots of things about themselves. Some peers could relate to what they experienced or liked, while others listened and learned about their classmates. The purpose was to open up understanding, recognize differences and view empathy towards others and their life experiences.

On Thursday, December 11th, the Vineland High School choir, dance, and theatre students brought joy beyond the classroom by visiting the Veterans Home, Autumn Lake Healthcare, and Spring Oak Assisted Living to perform for the residents. Through music, movement, and storytelling, our students shared the spirit of the season and created memorable moments for members of the community. These performances offered students a powerful opportunity to use the arts to connect, give back, and brighten the holidays for others.

Students in Ms. Schwan’s class at Mennies had a fantastic literacy activity! Students used Venn diagrams to compare and contrast two stories: The Gingerbread Man and The Stinky Cheese Man.
Afterwards, students decorated their own homemade gingerbread men—and for a fun twist, we turned one upside down and transformed it into a reindeer!
Such a creative and engaging way to build comprehension and celebrate the season!

Ms. Giblin and Miss Passetti’s third-grade class at Marie Durand Elementary School has been learning about soil in ELA and ecosystems in science. They are learning about how living and non-living things are interdependent upon each other in their environment. After watching a Generation Genius video about ecosystems, that showed how to make a terrarium, they were eager to get started. The class spent the afternoon building a terrarium together. They took turns sharing responsibilities and working together. They discussed what they had learned about the water cycle, and how the terrarium works. The students loved getting their hands hands dirty as they layered rocks, charcoal, mesh, soil, moss and plants into the terrarium. They even found a few insects that came with the moss and succulents from Ms. Giblin’s backyard. They finished up by everyone giving the ecosystem a generous spritz of water before putting the lid on top!!

Vineland High School senior Alexica Perez spent three weeks this past summer participating in the prestigious Governor’s School in the Sciences, a residential program held at Drew University. The program brings together 56 scholars from across New Jersey who are nominated by their high schools and selected by a committee based on academic achievement, SAT scores, essays, and a rigorous course load in math and science.
During her time at Governor’s School, Alexica studied a variety of scientific disciplines and worked with her group on a specialized research project examining the chemical composition of ancient Ecuadorian beads. Their work continued even after the program concluded. Alexica and her team developed their findings into a research paper, which they submitted to the MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference (URTC). The paper was accepted, presented at the conference, and is now set to be published by IEEE Xplore.

Two retiring members of the Vineland Board of Education were honored at last night’s meeting for their years of dedicated service to the district and the community. Mr. F. John Sbrana and Mrs. Kimberly Codispoti, both completing a decade of contributions in their respective roles, were recognized for their leadership, commitment, and lasting impact on Vineland Public Schools.
Mr. Sbrana, a lifelong Vineland resident and graduate of Vineland High School, was celebrated for his ten years of service on the Board, which followed a long and influential career in district communications. Over the course of more than forty years in journalism, public service, and educational leadership, he played a central role in shaping how the district engages with families and the community. Two Vineland High School AFJROTC cadets were celebrated at the December 3 Board of Education meeting for remarkable acts of service that reached far beyond the school community.
Cadet Major Austin Conrad was honored for leading a large humanitarian effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which devastated parts of North Carolina last year. After learning about the needs of the affected areas, Conrad organized a drive that collected thousands of pounds of food and essential supplies. He then made the eight hour trip to North Carolina himself, ensuring that every donation reached the families who needed them most. His initiative and compassion earned him the AFJROTC Humanitarian Award. Regional Director Colonel James Garcia presented the honor and noted that this was only the second time in his entire career that he had been able to award it.
Cadet Colonel Jaslynn Gonzalez was recognized for her significant impact on volunteerism within the program. As a leader in JOTC, she oversees logistics for service projects and plays a central role in organizing opportunities for her fellow cadets. Through her guidance, the program contributed more than one thousand hours of community service last year. Her award was presented by Petty Officer Angel Cruz of the United States Coast Guard.
The recognition of both cadets reflects the strong culture of service and leadership at Vineland High School and highlights the meaningful difference young people can make in their communities.
