The third grade students in Mrs. Nonnemacher’s class at Petway Elementary recently welcomed a special guest. Judge Mendez, who served in the New Jersey judiciary for over 20 years, visited to speak with students about his career, the United States Supreme Court, and the judicial system.
As part of their Shared Reading unit, Reaching Our Goals, students have been learning about influential figures such as Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. They explored Sonia Sotomayor’s life, focusing on her accomplishments, dedication, and perseverance as a Latina woman.
Judge Mendez connected to this learning by sharing that Sonia Sotomayor dreamed of becoming a judge as early as third grade and later became the first Latina Supreme Court Justice. He also spoke about his own commitment to promoting equality and diversity within the legal system, including honoring Hispanic heritage.
He explained that a judge’s role is to listen carefully and make fair decisions for all people. The visit was especially meaningful because Judge Mendez is the grandfather of one of the students, Lillian Mendez.
Students prepared thoughtful questions and created cards for their guest. Overall, the visit was both inspiring and educational.

Vineland High School and Thomas Wallace Middle School are strengthening their
commitment to student wellness, mental health, and positive youth development through
ANCHOR: A School-Based Youth Services Program. The program is fully funded by the New
Jersey Department of Children and Families (NJ DCF) and operated by Great Joy Community
Development Corporation (Great Joy CDC).

“A troubled student wins when they encounter a
problem and have a trained support person to help them resolve it almost immediately.
Access to these services during the school day truly changes the dynamic of a student’s
experience.” — Dr. Thomas McCann, Interim Superintendent, Vineland Public Schools

Founded in 2021, Great Joy CDC is dedicated to uplifting youth and strengthening families
through community-centered programs and support initiatives. The organization promotes
whole-person wellness and long-term self-sufficiency by providing access to essential
resources, including food, clothing, housing support, mental health services, educational
opportunities, and compassionate care.

“By partnering with Great Joy CDC, we are bringing
expert youth services directly into the hallways of Wallace Middle School. This means
support isn't something families have to go out and find—it’s integrated into the school day
to ensure every student feels seen, heard, and supported.” — Roselyn Rosado, Principal,
Thomas Wallace Middle School

ANCHOR stands for Access, Navigation, Care, Healing, Opportunity, and Resilience—the
core principles guiding the program’s mission to support the whole student. “As Program
Director, my goal is to create a safe place where students can decompress and access
resources throughout the school day,” said Nichole Roller, Program Director of ANCHOR.

“By providing consistent support, opportunities for skill development, and access to
resources, we help students build resilience and move forward with confidence. “Through a
prevention-focused, trauma-informed approach, ANCHOR collaborates with school staff,
families, and community partners to strengthen protective factors and reduce barriers to
student success.

“Having a dedicated wellness and youth services space sends a powerful message to our
students—we want them to know their mental health matters and that support is always
within reach. ANCHOR is a key part of the foundation we are building to promote resilience,
empowerment, and equity in care.” — Justin Adams, Principal, Vineland High School
(Tanner Building)

Services Offered Include:
- Mental health counseling
- Youth development and leadership opportunities
- Career and job readiness (resume building, interview skills)

Students in Mrs. Haley's 8th Grade Accelerated classes competed in a Stranded Project competition in preparation for the Lord of the Flies unit. They had to form a group based on skills they individually have to offer, work together to delegate roles and tasks for the benefit of the group, research Caribbean islands, create a map and slideshow, and present this information to their peers. The students voted on which groups had the best chance of survival. The winning students received an ice cream party.

We are heading to states!

Vineland High School’s talented dance students delivered outstanding performances at the NJ Teen Arts Festival, held at the Levoy Theatre in Millville on April 22. Showcasing their dedication, creativity, and technical skill, the dancers captivated both judges and audience members with a series of powerful and expressive routines.

Their hard work and commitment truly paid off. Each performance reflected countless hours of rehearsal and a strong sense of teamwork, resulting in a showing that was nothing short of exceptional. The dancers’ ability to convey emotion, precision, and artistry on stage set them apart as some of the most impressive performers at the festival.

In recognition of their excellence, the Vineland High School dancers have earned the opportunity to advance to the state-level competition, which will take place in North Jersey on June 1.

The Vineland community has much to be proud of as these young artists continue to represent their school with pride and distinction. We wish them the very best as they prepare to take the stage once again at the state competition.

On March 4, 2026, the New Jersey State Board of Education officially recognized March as Gifted and Talented Students Month across the state. In celebration of this recognition, Vineland Public Schools was honored to welcome the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Education, Dr. Lily Laux, along with other distinguished guests, on March 27, 2026. The visit provided an opportunity to observe and learn more about the district’s innovative Gifted and Talented (G&T) program.

During their visit, guests experienced Vineland Public Schools’ TAKE FLIGHT elementary program and SOAR middle school program. Together, these initiatives reflect the district’s strong commitment to providing rigorous, engaging, and equitable opportunities for gifted, talented, and twice-exceptional learners. Visitors observed instruction, engaged with students, asked thoughtful questions, and met with teachers and administrators from across the district.

Vineland’s Gifted and Talented program is built on a collaborative, multi-tiered model that builds on a foundation of multiple measures for student identification, ensuring equitable access and appropriately challenging learning experiences for all participants. In TAKE FLIGHT, students from all eight elementary schools come together at two designated “hub” schools, where gifted and talented teachers present an interdisciplinary gifted and talented curriculum. Instruction emphasizes collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application.

Mrs. Suzette DeMarchi, Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction, emphasized this commitment, stating, “Vineland’s Gifted and Talented program reflects our commitment to high-quality learning, equity, and opportunity—providing rigorous, engaging experiences that develop student potential and inspire students to think critically and achieve at the highest levels.”

The program’s design also prioritizes meaningful, real-world learning experiences. Dr. Ross Stanger, Supervisor of Instruction, explained, “We designed our gifted and talented program to creatively emphasize higher-level thinking while extending and adding dimensionality to the conventional curriculum. We present real-life challenges and ask students to collaborate in solution-finding, problem-solving, and applying skills through project-based learning opportunities. Because our program brings students from four schools together, the students develop relationships with students from other schools who also qualify for gifted and talented. Our philosophy is that students can ‘learn for learning’s sake’ while they are there, and not worry about achieving a grade in enrichment.”

A highlight of the visit included the opportunity for guests to witness firsthand the engaging activities students participate in during their gifted and talented instruction. One student shared a particularly meaningful reflection about Library Media Specialist Mrs. Tiffany Loveland, saying, “She has changed my life!”

Elementary and middle school students also had the chance to take photos with the Commissioner, marking a memorable and inspiring day for the entire Vineland Public Schools community.

Recently, students at Durand Elementary School celebrated Earth Day with a special presentation focused on environmental awareness and sustainability.

Thank you to Wild Forest Environmental for an outstanding Earth Day presentation. Their team truly captivated our Durand fifth graders. The explanation of how to collect waste from car washes, follow DEP environmental codes, and turn recycled materials into fresh drinking water was both fascinating and meaningful. We are so grateful for the time, energy, and passion their company shared to help our students better understand how they can protect our environment.

Wallace Middle School held its first Wallace Got Talent competition during the month of March, beginning with 12 contestants who each performed one minute of a school-appropriate song of their choice for the Wildcast Podcast. Student hosts Rosangelik Burgos, Tristan Boozer, and Serenity Lehner organized the performance schedule, edited recordings, coordinated student passes, and helped create a welcoming and supportive environment for all participants.

The competition featured three rounds in a bracket-style format, with winners advancing based on homeroom voting. The final round came down to Tristan Boozer (8th grade) and Amyrah Cottman (7th grade). After a close vote, Tristan Boozer was named the winner of Wallace’s first Wallace Got Talent competition.

Both finalists were awarded home podcast kits, generously provided by the Wallace PTO.

Mrs. DeRosa, Mrs. Snodgrass, and Mrs. Perez’s kindergarten class at Petway celebrated “Peeps Day” on Tuesday, March 31st with a day full of engaging, hands-on learning experiences across multiple subject areas. Each student adopted their very own Peep in the morning by working with a partner to solve a math problem, then thoughtfully named and cared for it throughout the day. As part of this activity, students demonstrated the Petway character traits by showing responsibility, kindness, empathy, acceptance and cooperation while tending to their “pets.”

The celebration also incorporated a collaborative STEM component, during which students worked in pairs to design and build homes for their Peeps using jelly beans and toothpicks. This activity was integrated into their math block, encouraging problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork.

In science, students participated in a “sink or float” experiment using their Peeps. They made predictions, tested their ideas, and observed the results, helping to build early scientific thinking skills through hands-on exploration.

Throughout the day, students earned “carrots” by making positive choices and exhibiting expected behaviors, which they used to “feed” their Peeps. This added an element of motivation and reinforced positive decision-making. At the end of the day, students proudly took their Peeps home, making for a fun and memorable learning experience.

Mrs. Mills, an English as a Second Language teacher at Marie D. Durand Elementary School and 2024-2025 Cumberland County Teacher of the Year, has been selected and successfully completed the 2025-2026 Rutgers Multilingual Educator Program (RUMEP) Fellowship. This highly competitive honor was awarded to only a handful of educators from a pool of more than 180 applicants from across the entire state of New Jersey, making her achievement all the more impressive.

The RUMEP fellowship brings together Bilingual, ESL, and World Language educators in a vibrant professional learning community designed to foster collaboration and growth across disciplines. This year's program focused on identifying student proficiency levels, developing strategies to support biliteracy, and designing, implementing, and assessing instruction that places students' voices, experiences, and joy at the forefront. Fellows participated in an in-person professional development workshop at Rutgers' Douglass Student Center, monthly virtual cohort meetings, and lesson observation feedback cycles with program mentors. Upon successful completion of all program responsibilities, fellows received a stipend.

Mrs. Mills follows in the footsteps of her colleague Ms. Larriu, an ESL teacher at Pauline Petway Elementary School, who proudly served as the 2024-2025 RUMEP Fellow and continued her dedication to the program as a 2025-2026 returning fellow.

As part of the fellowship requirements, Mrs. Mills completed two outstanding artifacts. The first, Multicultural Engagement via Multicultural Club, united MLL and non-MLL students in meaningful and enriching cross-cultural experiences. The second, the Family Heritage Project, invited ESL students and their families to celebrate their unique backgrounds through country presentations, family trees, and treasured family recipes, bringing tremendous joy and pride to students and families alike.

The Vineland High School AFJROTC program will host its 4th Annual Run 4 Ramirez on April 21st, 2026, at the VHS Tanner Building, following a weather-related postponement from the original April 2nd date.

This event was established in memory of former instructor MSgt Joseph Ramirez and continues to honor his legacy by raising funds for a scholarship awarded to three deserving cadets: one male 4th-year cadet, one female 4th-year cadet, and one senior cadet who has made a meaningful impact on the program through their dedication to its mission and their school.

Run 4 Ramirez is entirely planned and executed by AFJROTC cadets as part of a comprehensive leadership and management project. Throughout the process, cadets apply the skills they have developed during their time in the program, including presenting formal briefings to administration, coordinating logistics, organizing vendors and activities, promoting the event, and designing this year’s commemorative t-shirt.

Event t-shirts are available for purchase for $15 while supplies last.

Community members who would like to support the event or contribute to the scholarship fund can reach out to the AFJROTC instructors: Mrs. JoDenise Bolton-Muller at jmuller@vineland.org, MSgt Marcus Knowlton at mknowlton@vineland.org, or TSgt Jackson-Medley at tjacksonmedley@vineland.org

We look forward to another successful event as we honor MSgt Ramirez’s legacy and support our cadets.
