In Mrs. Flores' science classes, students have been diving into science in a fun and engaging way! To celebrate the month of March, they participated in March Mammal Madness 2025, the lucky 13th tournament, created by scientists and researchers at Arizona State University. "Since 2013, March Mammal Madness has been turning scholarly science into riveting stories, using the natural history and biology of animals to simulate epic battles. This year, students embarked on a journey across the world, celebrating animals, adaptations, ecosystems, and the coMMMunity."-ASU It being the third year that Mrs. Flores has introduced her students to this exciting competition, it was great to see students from previous years—and even some staff—join in on the fun! Students researched the combatants, analyzed habitats, and made their picks—predicting which of the 65 competing species would triumph above the rest. As they followed the competition, they strengthened their understanding of ecosystems and animal behavior, expanded their vocabulary, and reinforced concepts from their current science lessons, such as thermal energy and the cycling of matter. Each class crowned a top three winner, but the real prize was the knowledge gained along the way. The mini-lessons always ended with the March Mammal Madness Motto: "If you're learning, you're winning!"

Today, Vineland Public Schools joins the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program, Verizon’s award-winning education initiative which addresses barriers to digital inclusion. In partnership with Digital Promise, the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program works side-by-side with schools and districts to provide free technology devices, access to the internet and innovative STEM learning programs for today, so students can excel with technology tomorrow. Being part of Verizon Innovative Learning Schools will keep students connected, helping to facilitate learning wherever it’s taking place. In addition to reliable access for every student and teacher, the partnership also equips each school with a technology coach and provides robust professional development support for teachers to effectively integrate technology into the classroom. Edward Johnstone School, Sgt. Dominick Pilla Middle School, Thomas Wallace Middle School, and Veterans Memorial Middle School are among the 34 new schools joining the 12th cohort of Verizon Innovative Learning Schools, bringing the program’s reach to 660 middle and high schools nationwide. Participating schools, which have been selected by Digital Promise, will receive free Chromebooks with accompanying Verizon data plans for every student and teacher beginning in fall 2025. In addition, each school will be assigned a full-time coach to train teachers in using the technology for powerful and engaging learning experiences. “We are excited to partner with Verizon Innovative Learning Schools to provide our students with greater access to technology and learning opportunities,” said Superintendent Alfonso Q. Llano. “This partnership will empower our educators with new tools and training while ensuring that every student has the resources they need to succeed in today’s digital world. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this initiative will have on our schools and community.” "At Verizon, we all know how critical access to technology and skills development is in today’s digital world,” said Mario Acosta-Velez, Region Senior Director, Verizon Local Engagement and Corporate Social Responsibility. "That’s why we are proud to bring Verizon Innovative Learning Schools to Vineland Public Schools and enable students to develop the skills, knowledge, and capabilities to be successful and become the next generation of STEM leaders.” Verizon Innovative Learning is driving improvements in the classroom. In fact, 80 percent of teachers reported they felt more confident leveraging technology in teaching because of Verizon Innovative Learning Schools, and 80 percent said the program increased student engagement.* These efforts to support digital inclusion are part of Verizon’s responsible business plan. Mr. D's kindergarten class at Mennies has been working hard to become amazing authors and illustrators! This week, during writing, students learned how to stretch and sound out words and the important rule that names always start with a capital letter. Their hard work paid off, and they were so proud of their writing! Keep up the great work, future storytellers!

On Friday, March 28th, VHS marine science students were visited by Alex Ambrose. Ms. Amborse is a PhD student at Rutgers University and is currently based at Haskin Shellfish Lab. As part of her research, she created an interactive activity that uses real underwater footage collected from shellfish farms to bridge the classroom with real-world research in marine science. In teams, the students watched various video clips, made observations, developed hypothesis driven questions, fostering skills in scientific inquiry and critical thinking. This exercise provided students with an opportunity to engage with real scientific data while learning about ecosystems supported by shellfish aquaculture.

Mr. Greg Bartholomew's Chemistry students at Vineland High School measured the number of moles of chalk that they used after they drew with playground chalk on the parking lot. Students first measured the mass of their chalk and then had time to free-draw anything that they wanted on the parking lot. Some students chose to compete in tic-tac-toe, while others drew their favorite cartoon such as Spongebob Squarepants, while more artistically-inclined students drew more extravagant designs. After a few minutes, students returned to the classroom and re-weighed their chalk. They then calculated the number of moles of chalk (or calcium carbonate) (CaCO3) left on the parking lot by using Avogadro's number and mathematical calculations. Students enjoyed getting outside on a beautiful day and were highly engaged. The lesson had students 'doing science' and applying Chemistry concepts in a fun, hands-on way!

Eighth-grade students in Ms. Keramidaris' classes at Johnstone School celebrated the coming of March and spring by wearing a "Marti." This red and white bracelet symbolizes Spring coming, and it is worn to protect the person from the strong sun. At the end of the month, students took off their "Marti" and tied it on tree branches so that the birds could make nests. This is a Greek tradition, and many European countries celebrate March this way.
