On Pi Day, March 14th, Durand fifth-grader, Jason, gave a fantastic presentation about the mathematical constant, pi (π), in front of his classmates. With excitement and confidence, Jason shared his passion for math and how he was able to memorize 210 digits of pi! To kick off his Canva presentation, Jason explained what pi is: the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, approximately 3.14159. He made sure to explain that this number is infinite, with no repeating pattern, which fascinated his classmates.
To make his presentation more interactive, he brought in a few visual aids, including showing the formula for the circumference of a circle (C = πd) and a list of 1,000 pi digits for the class to follow. Jason didn’t stop there—he also introduced some fun facts about pi. He mentioned the Guinness Book of World Records winner, how people celebrate by eating pie, and also shared pi-related jokes. Mrs. Bailey even brought in both apple and pumpkin “pie” to show how pi could be applied to real-world scenarios. The students were engaged as they helped themselves to a slice. Lastly, he recited 210 digits of pi from memory, which impressed everyone.
To wrap up the presentation, Jason encouraged his classmates to learn more about pi and its importance in math. His enthusiasm for the subject made the topic come alive, and the class left feeling inspired and more curious about the world of numbers. Although he is only a fifth grader, Jason believes he will certainly have a future involving STEM as he has a keen interest in all of those subjects. Overall, Jason's Pi Day presentation was a perfect example of how perseverance, curiosity and enthusiasm can turn a seemingly complex topic into an exciting learning experience for elementary students!

From 20–21 March, students in Vineland High School's Model Congress Club took part in the 2025 New Jersey Model Congress at Rider University. Model Congress teaches students the detailed workings of Congress and allows them to participate in mock congressional sessions. For two days, twenty-five Vineland students participated alongside other schools from across New Jersey as senators or representatives — sponsoring their own bills, debating a wide range of political topics, and voting on bills in committees and in full floor sessions of Congress. Many of our students saw their bills passed by committees, and four Vineland students achieved the difficult feat of having their bills passed by the entire Congress: Adrian Conde, Melina Cortes, Paulina Tomlin, and Eva Testa. In addition, three Vineland students won rare and coveted leadership positions at the Congress: Michaela Giuliani as President of the Senate, Adrian Conde as Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, and Jorge Flores as Chairman of the House Government Reform Committee. A wonderful showing from our VHS students!

The VHS AFJROTC has been very active over the past few weeks. On March 3rd, their Color Guard presented the colors at City Hall for the Irish Flag Raising. On March 18th, the National Guard visited all VHS AFJROTC classes to inform students about careers and opportunities. On March 19th, the Color Guard presented the colors at the Women’s Hall of Fame Banquet with an all-female lineup.
Mid-year promotions have been awarded, and all cadets are now one stripe or higher. Alpha Flight is diligently preparing for the Run for Ramirez on May 2nd, an event for VHS staff and students. Hosted by AFJROTC, this event honors former instructor Sgt. Joseph Ramirez, who passed away in 2020. It also provides a chance for two fourth-year cadets—one male and one female—to earn a $1,000 scholarship.
Additionally, congratulations to c/Col Christian Van Otsen for becoming the first in the NJ2009-1 unit to complete ground school training and become a pilot. He has earned both his certificate and wings.
Thank you to c/Maj Erika Robinson for the write up!

Today, several students from Wallace Middle School had the incredible opportunity to participate in a virtual author visit with middle grade author Jessica Vitalis! Several ELA classes joined in to ask thoughtful questions about her books, writing process, and life as an author. Jessica shared valuable insights about the dedication and creativity it takes to be a writer, inspiring students to embrace their own storytelling journeys. It was an engaging and motivating session, sparking curiosity and a love for writing. A fun time was had by all!

To celebrate and raise awareness about Down Syndrome, Mrs. Smith’s 11th and 12th-grade classes at VHS Asselta took their lessons outside the classroom and into the RISE Life Skills Kitchen. Students explored various aspects of kitchen work, including preparation, setup, cleanup, and the differences between using the oven and stove, as well as the importance of using a timer on the stove.
In addition, the class engaged in discussions about Down Syndrome, gaining a deeper understanding of the condition and the significance of having an extra chromosome.
To showcase their newly acquired kitchen skills, the students baked and decorated Down Syndrome Awareness Ribbon cookies, along with "Rock Your Socks" cookies. These treats were generously donated to support the Down Syndrome Awareness Fundraiser, which took place throughout the week at the Asselta building. 💙💛

Three Veterans Memorial School students and their physical education teacher put Vineland Public School's vision of Portrait of a Graduate into practice by taking Responsibility when they tracked down the owner of several lost checks with significant monetary value.
VMS Eighth graders Yadier Alvarez Colon, Genesis Banderas, and Deena Margolin stumbled upon the checks and a bank deposit slip while participating in physical education class on the VMS football field on Friday, March 14.
"The wind was really blowing around, and we saw these papers on the field, and we first were laughing because we tried getting them, but the wind kept taking them further and further down the field," said Margolin.
The students caught up with the papers. "Once we picked them up, we thought they looked really important," said Banderas. "So, we ran to our teacher, Ms. S."
"These students showed amazing responsibility by acting with great integrity," said Mrs. Dawn Spickenreuther. "They all were so concerned about the person who lost the checks and wanted to go above and beyond to return them to the rightful owner."
Spickenreuther and her students, Alvarez-Colon, Banderas, and Margolin, turned into sleuths using clues on the checks and the deposit slip to contact Donna Tarabbio of Sandcastle Home Watch who said that the strong winds earlier that week blew the checks out of the window of her car and they were nowhere to be found. Although she immediately stopped payment on the checks, she was relieved when she received the phone call from Spickenreuther at the end of the week. Tarabbio commented on the integrity of all involved and how grateful she is for the students and their teacher.
"I would hug them all, but I know I can't," Tarabbio said. They are such great students, and they are so lucky to have such a nice teacher, too."
The students were so excited about being able to do a good deed for a community member that all three students, with administrative permission, called their parents from the AP's office to tell them of their act of being responsible citizens.
"I am just happy that we were able to find the person and return the checks to her," said Alvarez-Colon.

Sabira and Lexy from Ms. Miller's third-grade class at Mennies Elementary School were the first to earn enough tickets to have lunch with their teacher! Students earn tickets by demonstrating positive behavior, active participation, and strong academic performance — all while following our core character traits and Portrait of a Graduate competencies.
To earn a special lunch, students need 150 tickets — and since Sabira and Lexy were the first to reach this milestone, Ms. Miller let them pick a special treat! lunch!

Students continued to celebrate Week 2 of Read Across America Week at Little Lamb Preschool! Special guest readers from our district staff, family members, retired teachers, and VPS graduate students came in to read for 10 minutes independently. Students in Ms. Ecret's class at Wallace Middle School are reading Romeo and Juliet. After reading the famous balcony scene between Romeo and Juliet, her students were tasked with one of two projects. They could either create an Instagram post representing the conversation while citing lines from the play or create vows for Romeo and Juliet's wedding following Shakespeare's Sonnet Style of writing. These students did an AMAZING job and surpassed expectations! We are so proud of their hard work!
