Mrs. Marolda-Panichelli's 6th grade ELA class took a deep dive into researching Jackie Robinson. They did a close read on multiple articles, highlighting and taking notes on interesting facts about the first African American man to integrate into Major League Baseball, joining the Brooklyn Dodgers. Jackie faced some truly awful treatment, but came out as the Rookie of the Year in 1947. Two very unique facts about Robinson that the students found are that he is known for stealing home 19 times in his career, and on April 15th (the day he debuted) every year the MLB celebrates Jackie Robinson by having all players wear the number "42," the only retired number in all of baseball. The students are so proud of their biographical writing outcome!

aking Learning Outdoors 🌿📖

Ms. Cruz's students brought Milkweed, the novel by Jerry Spinelli, to life by exploring the courtyard in search of unusual plant growth. The novel the students are reading is a historical fiction novel about a nameless, small orphan boy, later called Misha, navigating the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, Poland, during World War II. The Milkweed plant becomes a symbol of hope in a dark and tumultuous time for the main characters. Students were asked to connect their findings in the courtyard to the symbolic milkweed pods in the novel, reflecting on how even in the harshest conditions, growth, hope, and resilience can still exist.
