Seventh and eighth graders collaborated during Panther Periods recently to work on shared vocabulary words for Holocaust and World War II-related novel studies. Mrs. Romalino's 7th grade classes partnered up with Mr. Muniz's 8th graders during Panther Periods to make meaningful connections to words they'll need to understand as they progress through their class's novels. Mr. Muniz's students are reading "Milkweed." They have background information from their 7th grade study of "The Diary of Anne Frank." The objective of this collaboration is to allow 8th graders to tap into their background knowledge of the Holocaust by teaching 7th graders about it as they encounter this time period for the first time. As a bonus, students made connections with those may not have an opportunity to spend time with during the school day! During regular ELA classes, students used the vocab posters posted in the C-Wing hallway between classrooms to learn new words like genocide, annex, explicit, perceive and Antisemitism.

Pilla 7th Graders studying "The Diary of Anne Frank" in ELA gained perspective on the horrors of the Holocaust and World War II in Mrs. Romalino's class on Friday, March 6. Students toured the apartment, or "Secret Annex," where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis during the Holocaust; a replica Jewish Ghetto; and a virtual rendering of a concentration camp. They were also immersed in 360-degree images of the main gates of the ultra-deadly Auschwitz Concentration Camp, where Anne's parents were held, and mother died. The virtual experiences inspired lots of discussion about the conditions in which innocent jews were imprisoned and murdered.

Students in Miss Welden and Ms. Franco's 7th grade ELA classes analyzed informational texts, literary texts, and video clips to gather information about Holocaust artifacts. They focused on evaluating the artifacts and their significance to the original owners. Students developed a deeper connection to how The Holocaust affected the individuals who experienced it and the damaging effects it left behind. Students then choose an artifact to recreate and present to their peers.

Pilla PGC peer mentors led a Family Night event last week to celebrate their work as mentors this year. In PGC, eighth grade mentors work with small groups of sixth graders throughout the school year to help them build skills needed for success in middle school.

After dinner and some icebreakers, parents, siblings, and teachers joined in an outreach together with their students that was designed to encourage communication and understanding. We are so proud of our eighth grade mentors and sixth grade participants!
