Last Friday, students in Mrs.Trionfo/Mr. Cervi & Ms. Murawski/Mrs.Negron’s classes at Rossi Elementary School met for their second buddy session. Students learned about ways to show respect by partnering up and playing Respect Bingo, colored a coloring page, and we ended our session by having students recap what they learned by sharing ways to show respect/be respectful. Students had a great time and are already looking forward to our next get-together!

After completing the read-aloud “Because of Winn Dixie” by Kate DiCamillo, students in Mrs. Garton and Mrs. Peretti’s 4th-grade class at Rossi Elementary School worked together to create posters showing the main character’s internal and external character traits. To celebrate, students enjoyed a party just like the one from the book! Looking forward to starting our next read-aloud by our new favorite author!

Durand students and staff love their FriYAYs, especially when it's a Fins Up FriYAY! One time per month, special guests join Durand administration, staff, and of course, the school mascot, Skipper the Dolphin, in welcoming students to school and celebrating the end of a wonderful week. This week Officer Cassidy from the Vineland Police Department and Mr. Mike Hall and Ms. Dana Blakely from the Transportation Department joined in the celebration. Music can be heard in the car rider and bus lanes along with big smiles of excitement as students arrive to school. Students are greeted with fist bumps, high-fives, hugs, and cheers as they walk into the building. It is a great way to celebrate students and show them how happy Durand staff is to see them at school. Future Fins Up Fridays will include visits from the Vineland Fire and EMS departments, along with many other special guests.

In Mrs. Tarzopoulos' kindergarten class at Durand Elementary School. students have been learning all about apples and how they grow. Students learned that there are so many different kinds of apples. They had the opportunity to taste 3 different kinds, Red Delicious (red), Granny Smith (green), and Golden Delicious (yellow). After students tasted the apples, they picked the color they liked best. After all the votes were counted, this sweet group of students liked Golden Delicious (yellow) the best! Students in Room 5 enjoyed their appley delicious day!

This week in Ms. Espinosa’s bilingual science classes at Wallace Middle School, 6th graders learned about how water moves. They created landforms using aluminum trays, beakers, and newspapers, then sprayed water onto their landforms to see how the water would move. Students got creative and created landforms such as mountains, plateaus, valleys, and more. Seventh graders learned about convection. We placed a cup of hot (red) water over a cup of cold (blue) water with a plastic sheet separating them. When the plastic sheet was removed, we saw that the two did not mix. Since heat rises, the hot water stayed on top and did not mix with the cold water. 8th graders learned that convection currents cause tectonic plate movement. This was modeled with cold (blue) and hot (red) water in beakers placed in an aquarium. Students saw how the hot water rose to the top and the cold water stayed at the bottom of the tank.

Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation works to ensure that every child in the U.S., especially those most at risk, grows up with dependable access to enough nutritious food to enable them to lead a healthy, productive life. As part of its commitment, Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation wants to engage and reward students who have made a significant impact against hunger and are driving awareness and mobilizing youth to be catalysts for innovative models and solutions to eliminate childhood hunger. The scholarship is named for the Foundation's founder and former president, Steve Brady, who was an unstoppable champion in the fight to end hunger. The Foundation is looking for students, ages 5 to 25, who are using their creativity, academic studies (like STEM), and organizational skills to help fight hunger in their communities. The Foundation would like to learn about the communities scholars serve and how they engage others in these efforts. National Scholarship winners receive a $10,000 scholarship and a $5,000 grant for their hunger-related charity. In addition, National winners will attend an all-expenses-paid trip to the Foundation’s annual fundraising event, the Sodexo Charity Classic Presented by PepsiCo, which will take place on June 10-12, 2024, in Marco Island, FL. They will meet top global and national food, beverage, supplies, equipment and facilities management companies who support the Stop Hunger mission. The annual application period is October 5 December 5. Visit https://aim.applyISTS.net/StopHungerScholars to apply before the deadline on December 5, 2023.

On Tuesday, October 3rd, Petway Elementary School parents and students were personally invited by classroom teachers to attend the first of four Parent Involvement Nights. Parents and their students met with classroom teachers to learn how to best help their children succeed at home through the use of instructional practices in the classroom. As parents and students enjoyed a pizza dinner, they learned how to navigate various websites, including IXL, Think Central, HMHed, Clever, and more! Parents were also invited to view modeled math and language arts lessons to help them better understand strategies they could use to support their children as they learn at home. Families left with resources, including Math Tool Kits and Reading Strategy anchor charts. A Petway Parent. was quoted as saying, "This is exactly what I needed to help me each night as I sit at the kitchen table with my son, trying my best to help him with his homework."
