AMSA at Johnstone 8th grade Honors English I students chose an "Unsung Hero" to honor in class. This project was part of the Unit 2 curriculum. Students read the book "Anthem,” discussed a hero's journey, and then culminated the unit with this project. Some of the heroes that the students chose ranged from Mr. James Jennings, Johnstone custodian, to Cole the Deaf Dog and Mr. Hannah, Allison Gogarty (The Morristown Cake Lady), and Colonel Callahan from the NJ State Police. These students researched their heroes, reached out to them and made contact, completed a presentation and a speech, and created a certificate. These students went above and beyond the requirements of the assignment. Amazing job to all of them!
Vineland All Middle School Productions (VAMP) is hosting its annual Spring Fling fundraiser on March 9th from 10 am to 2 pm at Veterans Memorial School, and they are looking for vendors and baked goods! The event will feature carnival games, food truck vendors, craft vendors, and live sneak-peek performances from the Aladdin Jr. cast throughout the day.

Mennies Elementary School students had lunch with their teacher today, celebrating their win from January Prato Points. Jaylene was the winner for January, and she was able to pick a friend--or sister, in this case--to join her for lunch. They were able to choose from any restaurant they wanted and enjoy lunch and a movie/game with their teacher. Students earn Prato points by being ready to learn, trying their best, taking chances, and following the rules. Names are accumulated in a bin, and one name is chosen at the end of each month. Congratulations, Jaylene and Jazlyn!
Fourth-grade students at Durand Elementary School had fun with fractions for Valentine's Day using conversation hearts to review graphing skills and fraction skills. Students estimated the amount of hearts and then compared the estimation to the actual amount. They made fractions for each portion of their colored hearts. Next, students made a bar graph and pictograph displaying their data. They also created three questions based on the information from their data charts and had a partner solve them. Math can definitely be sweet!
Veterans Memorial School Safety Patrol and NJHS, under the direction of Maria Kohansky and Lindsay Jenkins, joined residents of New Standard Senior Living in Millville, NJ, for their weekly Game Night on Tuesday, February 20th. Everyone had a wonderful time!
The Sabater Elementary School PTO sponsored a Carnival Bingo Night for fifth-graders on Wednesday, February 21. The event was a blast! Tavo the Clown brought extra fun to the night and there were many bingo winners.
The students in Mrs. Carson's and Mrs. Headley's 4th and 5th grade classes at Rossi Elementary School have been diligently working on several projects. The students demonstrated an understanding of putting dates in chronological order by researching facts about famous African Americans. The students used illustrations to reflect the dates of the events that occurred during the era of time. Some of the famous African Americans that were researched were: LeBron James, Michael Jackson, Ruby Bridges, Frederick Douglas, and Coretta Scott King, just to name a few.
These hard-working students also were able to present and research through various sites and library books information about our United States Presidents past and present. They were very intrigued that some of the presidents were in office for long periods of time and that two presidents had the same name and were a father and son duo.
Hats off to the wonderful, brilliant students for all of their continued hard work.
Little Lamb Preschool celebrated Kindness Week by teachers reading books on kindness and discussing how they can show kindness to their classmates. Students in each class made a friendship bracelet to give to another student. Students were so excited to receive their special gift! Teachers made real-world connections with their students by discussing families in their class who were firefighters, nurses, police officers, military personnel, and more. As a way of showing appreciation/kindness to our community helpers, booklets, cards, or posters were made by each class.
Students in Miss Carbo and Mrs. Geri's Kindergarten class at Mennies Elementary School had so much fun writing a paragraph using sight words and making a craft of Abraham Lincoln. It was exciting to learn about the past leaders of our country. Happy Presidents' Day!
Vineland High School students visited Rowan University on Tuesday courtesy of the VHS Guidance Department! The trip was organized for 11th and 12th-grade students with an interest in attending Rowan. During the visit, they had the opportunity to explore the campus, see college classes and dorm rooms, and dine at the dining hall.
Our FFA Chapter at Vineland High School is celebrating National FFA Week all this week! The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth, and career success training through agricultural education. Today, there are 945,988 FFA members in 9,163 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
"I am proud to have FFA back in Vineland after 58 58-year break," said VHS agriculture teacher and FFA advisor Annaliese Castellini. "FFA members are learning many skills in career areas and leadership. This is an organization any community should be proud to have."
The Vineland FFA Chapter will be celebrating all week with different activities, including community service and teacher appreciation days. You can celebrate with us at our Chick-fil-A community night tomorrow at Chick-fil-A Cumberland. FFA members will be there with plants and giveaways for children. Happy FFA week!
The AFJROTC had several events to spotlight last week!
Congratulations to c/SMSgt Jaslynn Gonzales, who was awarded the Air Force Challenge Coin on November 3rd of this year for being a big part of the inspection for the unit. c/SMSgt. Gonzales commanded her team of 2nd-year cadets through the 30-step drill sequence in front of her fellow cadets, instructors, Regional Director, administration, and board members who attended the inspection. She was able to receive the challenge coin based on her ability to pass the drill sequence with a flawless performance. Pictured with Vice Principal Mrs. Craig at the VHS Tanner building, Jaslynn is proudly holding the challenge coin she was awarded for her outstanding performance.
Our Alpha Flight, who created and sent e-cards to the children of St. Judes Hospital cadets in the Alpha Flight, worked on sending several cards each to the children for Valentine's Day. The remaining flights created Valentine's cards for the residents of the Vineland Veterans Home. Cards were delivered on Valentine's Day. Around 300 cards were hand-made by our unit.
The Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society will host an open house on Saturday, March 2 from 1-4 PM. The museum is open to all free-of-charge. Donations and new memberships will be accepted. Current members are reminded to pick up their copy of the Vineland Historical Magazine. The latest exhibit "Cast Your Ballot" is on display and the museum is open for self-guided tours. Vineland FFA completed their community service project today for National FFA week. Students in all agriculture classes made no sew fleece blankets to donate to local animal shelters. Students had fun making the blankets and worked together to make 36 blankets! Happy FFA Week!
Ms. Hensley and Ms. McGill's kindergarten class at Mennies Elementary School received a burst of inspiration and encouragement to follow their dreams last week following hometown superstar Isiah Pacheco's Super Bowl victory!
Mrs. Schiavone's Be The Change Club at Wallace Middle School created affirmation hearts and placed them on random student lockers!

Spilling the (Coffee) Beans on the RISE Program!
The students in the RISE program have had a very busy February! Many students started new work-based learning (WBL) sites and learned a variety of skills that they will be able to use when they transition from school to adulthood. The most exciting endeavor that some of our RISE students have started to work in has stemmed from a partnership that RISE has with the Adult Center for Transition (ACT) Program at the Rowan College of South Jersey at Cumberland campus. RCSJCC had a problem–they did not have an operating café for their students to purchase and enjoy breakfast, lunch, coffee, or drinks or snacks for quite some time.
The ACT and RISE programs partnered to solve this problem together, providing an opportunity for all of our students to get real-life work experience in a working kitchen and café at the RCSJCC Campus. With the help of our food service provider, Sodexo, the support of our district administration, along with the hard work of many, the Together Café opened for business on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. This week, the students assembled salads; made coffee; stocked bottled beverages; sold a wide variety of muffins, Danish, and cookies; practiced customer service and cleaning skills; and even used the cash register to check out our customers. The menu will feature sandwiches, wraps, and specialty salads in the coming weeks.
The Together Café is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am until 1:30 pm and is located on the RCSJ Cumberland campus. A special thank you to the RCSJ administration for the opportunity, Vineland Public School District for supporting and believing in the power of work and community-based education, the educators who are working to support our students so that they can learn in a positive, hands-on environment, and the students for showing us all that given an opportunity to try, success is inevitable!

Students in Mrs. Rowe’s class at Mennies Elementary School worked together with Mrs. Shavonne to create chocolate playdough just in time for Valentine’s Day! Students practiced following directions, using teamwork, and learning about being kind while also having tons of fun!
