Mrs. Myerson's First Graders at Mennies have been busy in ELA writing All About Me books! After they spent several weeks learning facts about important historical figures, such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Benjamin Franklin, Duke Ellington, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it was their turn to write their own important facts about themselves! Students began by analyzing writing models and highlighting the parts of self-descriptions. Then, they used sentence starters to write their own sentences telling facts about themselves on each page of their book. Colorful illustrations were added to each page and the book cover. Finally, students practiced sharing their writing with a friend and then with the entire class using our classroom microphone! These firsties loved being engaged in the writing process and publishing their pieces. Mrs. Myerson is SO proud of them!

Last Tuesday, David Ferrara, an AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador, visited the VHS S.H.A.P.E. Club to show the students how to check water quality using macro-invertebrates. The presentation began with a slideshow explaining what a watershed is and then went through the various critters they could possibly find in the water sample. Afterward, students sorted the aquatic "bugs," trying to identify them and decide what condition the water was in based on what they found.

Mennies' 5th graders in Mrs. Gaetano's class put their critical thinking skills to the test with a Mind Squeeze Activity! They were given a sheet filled with unrelated pictures and words and had two minutes to study it. Then, with the paper covered, they had four minutes to recall and write down as many words and images as possible. After the challenge, students discussed the strategies they used to improve their memory and how this activity connects to the Portrait of a Graduate (POG) competency: Critical Thinking. What a fun and engaging way to sharpen our minds and build essential thinking skills!

For most students, school buses and playgrounds are the highlights of the school day—but for Josiah Aponte, it was a maintenance truck that caught his attention. The Mennies Elementary School fifth grader developed a fascination with Vineland Public Schools’ maintenance truck #67, particularly the seal displayed on its side. Determined to find it, Josiah and his mother embarked on a journey across the district, hoping to spot the elusive vehicle and its driver, Jose Ayala. Word of Josiah’s search spread, eventually reaching the transportation department, whose staff stepped in to help. They managed to track down Ayala and coordinate a special meeting at the Landis Administrative Building. When Josiah finally got to see the truck up close and take photos with Ayala, it was a moment of pure excitement! Sometimes, the smallest things leave the biggest impressions—and for Josiah, truck #67 will always be a special one. Thanks to the kindness of the transportation team and Ayala, Josiah’s adventure ended with a memory he will treasure for years to come.

Our first-grade students at Mennies have been hard at work practicing their reading skills in class! With the help of Ms. Tarsatana, students used hands-on tools to sound out words with digraphs, making learning both fun and interactive. They also worked together to sort different digraphs and wrapped up their lesson with a shared reading experience. These engaging activities are helping our students grow into confident and skilled readers! We are so proud of our first-grade readers and their amazing progress!
