In Michael Mellace's English Language Arts (ELA) class at Vineland High School, students have a tasty reason to promote positive behavior! Mellace has collaborated with Chick-fil-A to create an innovative classroom incentive program. Under this program, students earn points for demonstrating positive behavior and taking commendable actions. Mrs. Smith's kindergarten students at Durand Elementary School are the cutest pumpkins in the patch and are "falling" in love with school! The students learned all about pumpkins and then conducted several experiments. Pumpkin Exploration Day was a huge success, especially with the help of some amazing parent volunteers. Students weighed, measured, opened, sorted pulp from seeds, discovered that pumpkins float, and tasted a variety of pumpkin foods. It was a perfect pumpkin day!

In celebration of fire safety month, Durand kindergarten students and their teachers took a short walk to visit their neighbor, Fire Station #3. Once at the station, they were met by career firefighter Scarpa and Captain Strain from Station #6. They learned about all the special tools on the big ladder truck and even got to climb in to check it out! They walked through the firehouse to take a peek at the kitchen and office. They were so excited to learn about firehouse life and wear their very own fire hats!

Students in Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Bonsall’s second-grade class at Rossi Elementary School have been learning about geography and maps. On Halloween, Petway students went trick-or-treating in a creative way. The students in Mrs. Diorio's, Mrs. Holt's, and Mrs. Snodgrass's classes went trick-or-treating with their favorite speech therapist, Mrs. Carini-Dorsey. Mrs. Dorsey made total communication a top priority with her students. First, all the students decorated their Trick or Treat bag that included a PEC of "Trick or Treat" and "Thank You." Then, each student was able to communicate "Trick or Treat" by either using ASL, PECs, or a Sound Switch.
The students had a great time, with a happy thank you and a smile after each treat.

On Wednesday, November 1, the Vineland High School JAG students joined the RISE students at the Salvation Army Corps of Vineland in distributing food and other items to community members for a work-based learning experience. Some members of JAG also painted to help beautify the facility by painting trim along the walls.
This week, the RISE students finished their safety training and started their work-based learning at McDonald's on North Delsea Drive. One of our students is working the fryer, and the other is working in the lobby and putting together Happy Meals!
Also, a student started with Sodexo at Central Kitchen, replacing one of the students who moved on to McDonald's. This student is assisting in assembling breakfast bags for all of our district students. It is great to see him smile as he is working and contributing to the community.
Lastly, we have two students helping with the interior maintenance of our Vineland Public School District bus fleet. They have been assisting our drivers by washing windows and sweeping the floors of the buses to help create a clean and comfortable environment for the students on their trips to and from school.
As always, thank you to the agencies that have been providing work-based learning opportunities for our RISE students. If you know of a business that would like to host our RISE students in a work-based learning experience, please contact Stacy Zentz at szentz@vineland.org.

The Applied Math and Science Academy 6th graders at Johnstone School are studying ratios and ratio relationships. Students used Skittles to create different ratios. They practiced simplifying their ratios, created equivalent ratios by scaling up or down, and made predictions about the class data. They were able to compare their ratios with the class ratios to see if they were equivalent. Students enjoyed their tasty treat while learning!

On November 2nd students from the RISE Program attended the Dare to Dream Student Leadership Conference at Rowan University. While there, students were able to network with other students from different schools, and attend two different workshops before being treated to lunch. Many of the workshops focused on self advocacy and employability skills. The students really enjoyed the keynote speaker, Mike Nelson who is pictured with our students after his speech. Mike is a true example of how with hardwork and determination, dreams really can come true! Overall, it was a great day on the campus to practice and generalize the skills that they have been learning in the RISE program.
