Ms. Ladner's 3rd-grade class at Mennies is diving into multiplication, and the excitement is contagious! 🎉 Students are eager to master their facts, working in small groups to tackle word problems and practice skills. Ms. Ladner's group even uses a whiteboard table for problem-solving, while others spread out in different learning stations. Some students work with a “student teacher,” others play math games and flashcards, and one lucky student gets to sit at the teacher's desk! Learning multiplication has never been so fun!

The teachers and students at D'Ippolito Elementary School are holding our eighth annual Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive to benefit children. We are collecting from our students and families and trying to reach out to the community to get more pajama donations to help kids in need. Anyone who would like to donate may mail new pajamas to D'Ippolito Elementary School at 1578 N. Valley Ave. in Vineland, NJ 08361. We greatly appreciate any and all donations! Our drive will run from Monday, November 11th through Friday, December 6th. Only brand-new pajamas will be collected in all sizes from newborn through adult. The pajama drive is organized in partnership with Pajama Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting a comforting bedtime routine for children affected by instability to help them thrive. Once our donations are reported to Scholastic, they will pair each set of pajamas collected with a new book, and through The Pajama Program, will be donated to a local organization. Last year, 212 sets of pajamas went to The Inspira Monarch Family Success Center, located at 1038 E. Chestnut Ave. in Vineland. D'Ippolito students who donate a new pair of pajamas will be able to wear their own pajamas to school on Friday, December 20th, as a reward for their generous gifts.

Students at Dane Barse recently had an incredible opportunity to work with the Board of Elections, where they were able to try out voting machines and learn firsthand about the voting process! It was more than just a lesson on how to vote—it was a chance to connect what they’re learning in the classroom with real-world experiences. This month, the focus has been on empathy—the ability to understand and care about how others feel. Using Election Day as a guide, students were encouraged to think about how empathy plays an important role in the voting process. The morning message sparked discussions on how each vote reflects diverse perspectives and the importance of listening to and respecting the choices of others, even when there are disagreements. By linking empathy with voting, students are learning that being a good citizen is not only about knowing how to vote, but also about being kind, thoughtful, and understanding toward others. Voting is about more than choosing one’s own preference; it’s about working together to build a better future for everyone. A huge thank you to the Board of Elections and Mr. Stanger, Supervisor of Instruction, for making this such a valuable learning experience. We look forward to seeing these students grow into caring, thoughtful members of our community!

Miss Giordano’s First Grade class at Petway held a lively pretend election inspired by the story Duck for President. First, students listened attentively as they learned about Duck's journey from farm animal to political candidate, sparking discussions about the role of voting. Each student then registered to vote, creating personalized voter registration cards to make the experience feel official. When voting day arrived, students cast their ballots, carefully placing them into a decorated ballot box. After everyone voted, the class worked together to tally the results, counting each vote one by one. Excitement filled the room as they announced the winner, and with a landslide victory, Duck took the title! This hands-on activity not only made learning about elections fun but also helped students understand the importance of participation and fair counting in the voting process.

Winslow's kindergarten class in Room 29 explored the exciting world of voting and decision-making with "The Great Cookie Election"– and it was a blast! Students chose between two "candidates"—Oreo and Chocolate Chip Cookies—in a hands-on, fun-filled learning experience. Throughout the activity, they registered to vote, designed campaign posters, and participated in a taste test to make informed choices. We capped off the project by casting ballots in our classroom voting booths, tallying votes, and celebrating the results together. This activity helped our young learners understand decision-making, teamwork, and respectful discussions—all while having a deliciously fun time!🎉🍪

The candidates: Chocolate Oreo and Golden Oreo! Students cast their vote in the ballot box, then excitedly waited for the results. It was a close race, but ultimately, Golden Oreo won, showing it was the clear favorite among students! Students' favorite part was getting to sample their favorite cookies.

On October 31st, the ELA and enrichment classes that visited the Memorial School Media Center put their book knowledge to the test. The students engaged in a fun and interactive activity to deepen their connection with classic literature: a Book Villain Guessing Game. Mrs. Bermudez, Memorial School Media Specialist, displayed pictures of well-known villainous characters from various books. Students browsed the gallery, guessing the identities of these characters based on visual clues and their own knowledge of the stories. The activity helped students enhance their literary knowledge while enjoying a friendly, competitive atmosphere!

The RISE students had a fantastic experience painting the autumn landscape at Parvin State Park on Friday, October 18th, and Tuesday, October 22nd. They used simple, affordable household items such as cotton balls, clothespins, cardboard palettes, and paint purchased from Dollar Tree to create their artwork. This project not only sparked their creativity but also demonstrated how they can enjoy meaningful, low-cost experiences in nature within their community. These opportunities are helping to prepare them for staying socially active and engaged in their communities as they transition from high school to adult life. The beauty of the changing seasons inspired many students to step out of their comfort zones and explore new interests.

On Halloween, Mrs. Norton and Ms. DeRosa’s kindergarten class at Winslow School joined Miss Perry’s class for a fun-filled pumpkin carving experience! 🎃 Students watched as Miss Perry demonstrated each step of carving a pumpkin, with Mrs. Norton helping guide the activity. Everyone had a blast scooping out the pumpkin insides – some brave kiddos even used their hands, while others opted for a spoon! Before diving in, we made predictions on how many seeds might be inside and ended our autumn adventure by tasting freshly roasted pumpkin seeds. Such a memorable way to celebrate the season together! 🍂

On October 2nd, the VHS AFJROTC launched Operation Linville Falls, an initiative inspired by Cadet Austin Conrad’s heartfelt letter describing the hardships faced by residents In the North Carolina town of Linville Falls, as well as other nearby communities of Spruce Pine, Newland, Elk Park, and Chimney Rock. These towns were devastated by Hurricane Helene, leaving many citizens without homes, electricity, heat, and essential supplies. Air Force Junior ROTC Unit N.J, 20091, Commanded by Cadet Colonel Erin Shipman, convened a staff meeting with Cadet Corps leadership to discuss Conrad’s letter and the dire situation. With the approval of AFJROTC Senior Instructor Master Sergeant Jim Eubanks and VHS administrators, the project was set in motion. Cadet Shipman designed flyers, while Cadets Aiden Martinez, Miguel Rodriguez, and Miana Arrocho prepared donation boxes to be placed in the school office for students and staff to contribute supplies. Cadet Greg Colon briefed all flights to inform cadets about the drive. On October 11th, Cadets Joseph Monnata and Cynthia Zavala inventoried items and made a list of what they had so far on that day. On October 16th, Cadets Christian Van Osten, Miguel Rodriguez, and Erika Robinson participated in an interview with VPS Public Affairs director Gia Messore to spread the operation to the public. The following day, October 17th, Cadet Leadership, under the direction of AFJROTC instructor JoDenise Muller, unloaded donated items for local organizations. Cadets Cynthia Zavala-Beneat and Erika Robinson organized, packed, and labeled the boxes. Later that day, Cadets Shipman, Van Osten, and Conrad returned to load a 16-foot trailer with over 10,000 pounds of cargo. An update on this operation is that all supplies were distributed to all six towns. Through the dedicated teamwork of the entire unit, Operation Linville Falls was a huge success for VHS AFJROTC. On October 19th, VHS AFJROTC was in the homecoming parade. They marched from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church parking lot to Gittone stadium. They had their Color Guard, Saber Team, and a flight of 42 cadets participate in the Parade. The parade ended with the color guard presenting the colors on the field.
