Ms. Schwan's 3rd/4th-grade class at Rossi Elementary School have been busy "reindeer scientists." Since it is the holiday season, students have been creating various crafts, BUT they are still busy learning! First, the students learned about magnets and their forces. Students worked cooperatively in pairs to complete an experiment on various objects that were magnetic or not magnetic. They created a chart listing their results and explained their results. Next, the students learned about electromagnetic fields and how objects can either repel or attract one another when they become electrically charged. Students worked in teams to "charge" a plastic rod with a wool cloth. The plastic rod became negatively charged and repelled the balloon. We recreated this experiment multiple times using various objects and our best results were when we rubbed two pieces of cloth together. Last, the students made their own levitation device by creating static electricity. Students rubbed a strip of plastic and a balloon with a cloth, creating the same charge on both items. Since the same charges repel each other, students were able to use their balloons to make the strip of plastic float! Our Rossi Reindeers are Rocking their science lessons!

Safety Patrol members from all four district middle schools hosted a “Senior Luncheon” event on Thursday. This is the first time the event has been held since 2019. Senior citizens were able to attend the event and enjoy lunch and dessert and socialize with the Safety Patrol members. Students were supervised by Jamie Ecret, Wallace Safety Patrol advisor, Maria Kohansky, Memorial Safety Patrol Advisor, and Melissa Finizio, Pilla School Assistant Principal. The event was organized by Tricia Dilisciandro from The Senior Center Director for the City of Vineland. Wendy Osborne coordinated the Safety Patrol participation with Captain Lene Bowers and Officer Bill Burris. A great time was had by all who attended!

Chris Hannah and his super dog Cole were our superhero guest speakers for the Rossi Elementary School WISE assembly! We rewarded students for empathy and introduced encouragement, and Mrs. Erin Bonsall was our WISE guy. Chris and Cole emphasize the importance of encouraging others and accepting everyone regardless of their differences. Chris and Cole are always so inspiring. We love having them! Go Rossi owls!

On Saturday, December 2nd, Winslow PTA hosted Breakfast with Santa. Families enjoyed a hot breakfast, a visit with Santa, holiday music, cookie decorating, writing letters to Santa, making reindeer food, and a little shopping in the Winslow Holiday Shop. It was a well-attended event, and we are very appreciative of all the hard work of our PTA and Winslow staff during this busy holiday season!

Mrs. Evans accelerated 7th-grade students at Wallace Middle School are focusing on density in Chemistry. Students are to determine the effects of soaking a gummy worm in water overnight to determine if there is a change in the gummy worm's density.

Petways' Kindergarten classes learned about holidays around the world, which started in the Netherlands with Sinterklass. Children who live in the Netherlands put their shoes by a fireplace on Sinterklass Eve in the hopes that Sinterklass will come and fill them with treats. After learning about Netherlands holiday traditions, the students put their shoes outside in hopes that they would get a treat! Students were so excited to see that Sinterklass did come and that they all received a candy cane!

Students in Miss Welden’s ELA classes at Pilla Middle School learned how to operate a courtroom during a trial when they prosecuted the narrator of The Tell-Tale Heart for committing a crime. The students collected textual evidence to use during a mock trial. They researched and performed the jobs of the judge, jury, lawyers, and expert witnesses. On Thursday, December 7, Miss Welden’s students had the opportunity to participate in a meet and greet with retired Judge Julio Mendez, father of Pilla Asst. Principal Mrs. Finizio. The students prepared questions and they participated in a discussion about courtroom proceedings, NJ law, and trials with Judge Mendez.

This week, the Vineland High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter reinstated a time-honored tradition by recreating a group photo in front of the Landis Administrative Offices, the former Landis School. Landis School served as the original Vineland High School until the opening of the VHS South building in 1963, coincidentally marking the concluding year of the VHS FFA program until its reestablishment this year.
In an homage to history, the current FFA members, accompanied by their agriculture teacher and FFA advisor, Annaliese Castellini, visited Landis on Tuesday to replicate the customary group photograph that had served as an emblem of the FFA legacy. The district's archives house FFA chapter photographs tracing back to 1932, offering a visual narrative of the organization's history.
A slideshow featuring those photographs can be viewed here: https://bit.ly/3NeIVko

Superintendent Alfonso Llano welcomed Vineland High School students and families to the first Community Conversation meeting, held on Monday at VHS South. The meeting provided families with a chance to hear from district and school administration on different aspects of the high school experience. Families were then given the opportunity to ask questions and engage in dialogue with the administration. Approximately 40 families, school staff, and Board of Education members were in attendance. The district plans to hold meetings for all school levels as the year progresses. Dates will be announced following the new year.

Congratulations to Rossi Elementary School's Gold Badge Winner for the month of December, Isabella Marciano! Isabella has been a huge help down at car riders in the afternoon and is an indispensable part of our dismissal procedures. She is kind and courteous to all. Great job, Isabella!

The fifth-grade class at D'Ippolito Elementary School made reservations at the Cozy Christmas Cafe on Tuesday, December 5th. The two-course meal included informational text, narrative nonfiction, fantasy, & realistic fiction. The diners chopped and chatted. They had to identify the genre and support their answers with evidence. At the end of their meal, they chatted about their answers and responses. Pajamas were welcomed. Be on the lookout for their restaurant reviews! 🎄

Students in Mrs. Haley's 8th Grade Accelerated classes worked with Sally Goode (Veterans Memorial Media Specialist) to create luminaries using the school's Glowforge machine.
Students began by using a website The Righteous Among the Nations to research an individual who risked their own life in order to save Jews from being exterminated by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. The students completed a research document answering a few questions in order to personally connect with their individual:
Which country is this person's story from?
What topic is this individual associated with?
What is the individual's name?
What did this person do to earn them the title of one of The Righteous Among the Nations?
What makes you personally connect to this individual?
If you could choose one symbol to represent this person, what would it be and why?
Sally Goode spent many hours generating a template compatible with the Glowforge machine. Students designed their own luminary using this template and were able to watch how their designs came to life, all with Ms. Goode's gentle guidance.
These students were able to comprehend how important it is to have empathy and compassion and that even they have the chance to "be a light in someone's life."
We not only remember those individuals lost during this tragic event in history but also those who fought for what was right. It is because of them that our students have the knowledge to "light the way" in the future.

Join us in celebrating the legacy of Mr. Ed Harvard, former VHS administrator and coach, as we honor him by naming the VHS South Gym after him on Friday, Dec. 15. The event kicks off at 5:30 pm, followed by an exciting boys basketball matchup against Bridgeton HS at 6:30 pm.
