Attendance Update 🚦🏃‍♀️ The Race to Extra Recess has brought some friendly competition to Mennies! Our youngest Marvels showed up in a big way this week and jumped out to an early lead on the game board—Kindergarten has their eyes on that extra recess! Across the school, the top classes in each grade level are working hard to show up every day and stay focused on learning. We can’t wait to see how things shape up next week! The Mennies art room is always full of excitement! 🎨❄️ Today, our first graders were busy creating snowmen, working together with lots of glue to build the base of their masterpieces. The laughter and joy filling the room were absolutely contagious. Everyone loves art with Ms. Cook—where creativity and fun come together every single day!

Perfectly Present in December! 🌟 Our Marvels who were present every single day in December were recognized with a special certificate from their principals for being Perfectly Present. We are so proud of their commitment to showing up ready to learn each day! We can’t wait to see which Marvels will be perfectly present in January—every day counts, and every Marvel matters! 💙💛

Mennies first graders in Mrs. Myerson’s class jumped right back into learning after winter break! Students are working hard to become Marvel Readers. While Mrs. Myerson pulls small groups for targeted instruction, students engage in hands-on center activities around the room using flexible seating. The energy during the DI reading block is evident—students are focused, engaged, and excited about their learning. We love seeing our young Marvels working hard and growing every day! ⭐📚💙

🚀 Race to Recess is ON! 🚀

To keep our positive attendance momentum going, we’ve launched a brand-new game board and homeroom leaderboard for our latest challenge: Race to Recess! 🏁

Here’s how classes move forward:

93% or higher attendance → Grade level moves 1 space

95% or higher attendance → Grade level moves 2 spaces

97% or higher attendance → Grade level moves 3 spaces

🎉 Incentives that make it Marvelous:
🏆 Winning grade level earns extra recess with admin + a dress-down day!
🍪 Top class in each grade level earns a cookie party
⭐ Overall top class in the school earns a special prize!

📌 This challenge is all about goal setting—tracking progress, celebrating growth, and working together toward a shared goal. When students see their attendance make a difference, motivation grows!

And remember—this isn’t just about attendance for attendance’s sake. Students who are chronically absent are at the highest risk of being below grade level. Being present is step one of learning!

Mennies Families,

Tomorrow, the district will operate on a 2-hour delay. We will open our doors to students at 10:55 AM. The Champions before-school program will also run on a 2-hour delay.

Please do not drop students off before 10:55 AM, as staff will not be available to supervise.

We can’t wait to see our Marvels in school tomorrow!

Congratulations to Dr. William Mennies School’s 2025 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Lindsey Bertonazzi, and our Educational Service Professional of the Year, Ms. Grace Ortiz!

Mrs. Bertonazzi is an exceptional 2nd-grade teacher and a true team player. She goes above and beyond for her students, creating engaging and meaningful lessons that spark excitement in the classroom. She is a strong leader at her grade level, always willing to step in and support others. Whether she is organizing school events, serving on the Mennies Mission Team, or volunteering her time to make our school shine, Mrs. Bertonazzi consistently demonstrates her dedication to the Mennies community.

We are equally thrilled to honor Ms. Grace Ortiz for her unwavering dedication, passion, and commitment to our students. She truly cares about every child she works with and is always willing to step in wherever she is needed. Her support, positivity, and hard work have helped make Mennies the special place it is today.
