New Parameters and Requirements for District Network Login Passwords

Information for All Staff Who Access The District's Network

Security procedures which protect all end user's data and student information systems must be implemented.

For more information from Microsoft Technet see: Strong Passwords Password Best Practices Password Policy

In a recent NJ State review of district IT (information technology) operating procedures, the district's password complexity schema was less than acceptable for initial computer logon (NOTE: this does not refer to login passwords for email accounts).

To that end and to comply with those recommendations to provide a a more robust and structured password change procedure, the new parameters and requirements are listed below.

Password changes will be required every 180 days and the history of passwords is set to 2.

Password must meet complexity requirements

Passwords must meet the following minimum requirements when they are changed or created:

• Not contain significant portions of the user's account name or full name

• Be at least EIGHT characters in length

• Contain characters from THREE of the following four categories:

1. English uppercase characters (A through Z)

2. English lowercase characters (a through z)

3.Base 10 digits (0 through 9)

4. Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)
