The operation was eventually located at Hal Roach Studios in Culver City, California, which was called 'Fort Roach'; the abbreviation F.M.P.U. was/is pronounced 'fum-poo'.

Soon after the United States was propelled into active engagement in World War II, General 'Hap' Arnold, then head of the Army Air Force, saw the need to make films for training and for morale & propaganda, and he asked Warner Bros. studio head Jack L. Warner for help. Warner took Owen Crump with him to Washington DC, and the deal was struck.

The first F.M.P.U. production, "Winning Your Wings", was made at Warner's studio in Burbank, for the purpose of getting much-needed enlistments; the short film was released theatrically in May 1942, and is credited with 150,000 new recruits.”  Includes lists of personnel, films made and more.  We didn’t find any of the films for viewing on the site.  Good

LESSON PLANS & CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

ADOLF HITLER: WAS HITLER A PASSIONATE LUNATIC? – LESSON PLAN     NEW!

http://www.learningcurve.gov.uk/snapshots/snapshot06/snapshot6.htm

A lesson plan using primary documents for grades 9 and up on Hitler.  “Hitler is perhaps one of the most notorious characters of the 20th century. We know what atrocities were committed during the 12 years that Hitler led Nazi Germany and therefore, we have very firm opinions about him. Using hindsight (looking back with the knowledge of what has happened) we often ask why he was not stopped earlier. However, at the time, people could not predict what he would go on to do. Or could they?

By looking at sources from the time, we can see how people viewed him. Was he regarded as a "passionate lunatic" who would wreak havoc all over Europe? Or a slightly odd eccentric who was rebuilding Germany?

The sources below are from 1937. By this time Hitler had begun to reverse the Treaty of Versailles by rebuilding his army and moving troops into the Rhineland. He had also tried to unite Germany and Austria. Throughout this time he made passionate speeches about expanding German territory. These words and deeds worried some foreign observers.”  Excellent

The lesson begins with a full-class exploration of the famous “I WANT YOU FOR U.S. ARMY” poster, featuring a determined Uncle Sam. Students’ individual analysis projects can focus on any World War II poster.

The available collections include not only American posters, but also posters from Canada, Great Britain, Germany, and the Soviet Union. Students complete an online analysis and submit either an analysis worksheet or use their worksheet responses to write a more formal essay.”  Excellent

http://www.learningcurve.gov.uk/snapshots/snapshot26/snapshot26.htm

A classroom activity for senior high schools on the liberation of the Belsen concentration camp using primary sources.  The outside world knew of the camps even before the war, but took little notice of reports of what they were like. Thus when Allied soldiers began to advance into Germany at the end of the war and discovered the camps, they were deeply shocked by the conditions. These documents record what the British soldiers found, and how they responded.”  Excellent

A lesson plan using original documents for grades 9 and up on the British response to the threat of German missiles.  “It was then that intelligence of a new threat to Britain's cities began to emerge - missiles and rockets. Drawing upon research and analyzing a variety of sources—including the historical novel The Journal of Ben Uchida, firsthand accounts, government documents, and select portions of the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution—students will write dramatic monologues that testify to some of the injustices of this period.”  Excellent

You are going back to 1944. As Head of SOE it is your job is to decide which of two ways of killing Hitler should be given the go-ahead. IMAGES AT WAR – LESSON PLAN                                NEW!

http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=273

A lesson plan for grades 9-12 on photographs of war scenes.  Visual materials can speak of the past with such immediacy that we feel ourselves in the presence of those times, drawn to knowledge by the power of emotion. Yet, like all documentary materials, images of the past carry contextual information which, after careful analysis, may reveal as much about the past as the evidence presented to our eyes.” Excellent

On the other side stood those who were called "isolationists," who believed that the president's policies were making it increasingly likely that the country would end up in another disastrous foreign war. A webquest for high school students on the use of the atomic bomb to end the war with Japan.  “  In August of 1945, during World War II, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.  This action was followed by the surrender of Japanese forces but also resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives.  It is the job of you, the student, to determine whether or not this measure by the United States was justifiable in this conflict.  There are major ethical implications that need to be explored in this context but there is also a wealth of information that one can use to determine what other paths could have been followed in resolving this conflict.  This project will guide you on a quest to learn the circumstances surrounding the development of this weaponry, the United States' involvement in the conflict, communications between Japan and the United States, and possible alternatives (or lack thereof) to the bombings themselves.  This information taken from both sides involved will lead you to thoughtfully draw your own conclusions based on the actions taken by those involved in the war.”  Excellent

INVESTIGATING WORLD WAR I AND II ALLIANCES – WEBQUEST        NEW!

http://questgarden.com/75/89/1/090124155821/

A webquest on World War I and II alliances for upper elementary students.  Your task seems quite simple-research both World War I and World War II. You will use this research to create a Power Point in order to present your ideas for the commemorative insert to the editor of The Greenville Times as well as various other employees. The focus of your research should include: the countries present in each of the alliances that existed during both World Wars; and the impact that each of the respective alliances had on the war, other countries, and on the world in general. A word to the wise-although this task seems overly simple, do not be fooled. Any good journalist knows that he must have more information and research than what he needs for his article requirements. This way, when he writes the article, the information he uses is all substantial and necessary; none of his writing is just "fluff" or "filler information." So, to sum it up: you should have enough information to fill a two page spread in The Greenville Times, a draft of the spread to turn in to your editor, corresponding photos and captions, and a Power Point prepared to discuss your ideas for the commemorative insert to the editor. I know you can and will do well! Now get to work!”  Excellent
