Mennies' Computer Lab
Mennies has a beautiful computer lab with 28 computers in it. The students go to the lab once every 6 school days for a 40 minute lab time. There Mrs. Tanya Bruce, our computer literacy teacher, teaches them various computer skills; such as keyboarding skills, mouse skills, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, KidPix drawing program, Kidspiration and research on the Internet. The children write stories, play educational games, stream videos from UnitedStreaming, strengthen their reading and math skills via programs like SuccessMaker, Scholastic's BookFlix, TumbleBooks and they, of course, "surf the web" for information pertaining to what they are studying. They use Enchanted Learning and Grolier's Multimedia Encyclopedia licenses for research. The students in grades 2-5 also use KidBiz. This program has a strong reading component, a writing component; the children also do e-mail and are directed to a "current events" article to read and respond to. In these same grades, the children use BrainPOP which has wonderful science based videos and lessons.
Our district has a filtering system in place for all Internet work.
