Four VHS Juniors Show "Outstanding Potential" as College Scholars
Four Vineland High School juniors have qualified to enter the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program by showing “outstanding academic potential” in the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
The students are Carolyn Brooks, Samuel F. Faul, Alexander Mayo, and Alyssa Shadinger.
These students had an index score of 200 or above, and ranked among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants of some 1.4 million program entrants. Because of their performance, these students have now been invited through their school, to be referred to two colleges
or universities in the United States in which they are especially interested. There is no charge for this College Plans Reporting Service (CPRS), which is offered solely to encourage college officials to communicate directly with these scholastically able students about educational opportunities that may be available to them.
Participation in this program is completely optional, and the decision about whether to use this service will have no effect on the student's standing in the National Merit Program. Students may use the CPRS via a web site: www.collegeplans.org
Of the more than 50,000 students being offered this service, about 16,000 will be named National Merit Program Semifinalists, representing the top scorers in each state, and approximately 34,000 other high scorers will be commended for their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. Semifinalists and Commended Students in the 2008 program will learn of their standing in September.
Semifinalists will be the only students who will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards to be offered in 2008.
