D’Ippolito Elementary School recently hosted a parent event entitled “Everyday Math and Math for Everyday.” Parents and children joined district supervisor, Donna Nedohon, for an overview of the district’s math program followed by break out sessions for every grade level with the
classroom teachers. This evening was planned and presented to help parents strengthen their child’s math skills at home. The teachers taught parents games from the program and introduced them to new algorithms that are used in the Everyday Math series.
“It truly was an evening for parents requested by parents,” said Mrs. Gail Curcio, Principal. “As a membership school of the National Network o
f Partnership Schools (NNPS), one of our goals is to offer opportunities for families to be involved with learning activities at home. This evening’s program provided a chance for families to do just that,” continued Curcio.
Another NNPS goal of the school is to collaborate with the community. On hand to offer services to D’Ippolito families were the Boys and Girls Club, the Police Athletic League and the Newfield Bank. The Style Squad, from Cumberland Mall; the school’s community partner, and Vineland High School student volunteers also contributed to the evening’s success by serving dinner and assisting parents. Fourth grade teacher, Andrea Evans received a Vineland Education Association PRIDE grant in the amount of $1,400 which paid for refreshments and materials. According to Assistant Principal, Jennifer Frederico, “the evening was an overwhelming success with over 200 people in attendance. Most (of the parents) were asking for more time in the sessions!”
