A “jeans day” fundraiser will be held in Vineland Public Schools, including district offices, on May 12 to benefit Miguel Nunez, a VHS graduate who is again battling cancer, said Mrs. Karla Holt, Food Services Director.
Nunez, now attending Cumberland County College full time, is also working as a food service substitute worker at Sabater Elementary School.
Employees who wear jeans on that day will pay $5 for the privilege and the money will go directly to the Nunez family. The donations will be used to offset expenses related to his treatment, including travel, $21 per day parking and other costs not covered by insurance.
According to Mrs. Holt, Nunez was previously treated for osteoscarcoma when he was a Vineland High School senior two years ago. “The cancer has returned and is now in his lungs,” said Mrs. Holt. “He is meeting with the surgeon this week to discuss his options for treatment. As a mom and a parent, I just can’t imagine news like this.”
Nunez’ mother, Annette Santos, is a Bilingual Clerk Typist in the Food Service office. His brother, Mark, works in the cafeteria at Durand School.
“The young children at Sabater really love Miguel,” said Mrs. Holt. “In fact, he told me he wanted to teach after his experience working with the children in the cafeteria.”
The $5 donation can be sent to the senior cook in the cafeteria of each school or sent directly to the food service office at Wallace Middle School, 688 N. Mill Road.
