Durand Elementary School Wins $2500 Best Buy Teach Award
Durand Elementary School has won a $2,500 “Best Buy Teach Award” from the electronics retailer for the school’s morning TV program “Durand TV,” which integrates technology into the curriculum, announced Dale Horner, principal.
The grant will be used to enhance the program, which mimics the ABC TV broadcast “Good Morning America”. Durand TV” uses students as announcers and crew, and is directed by Michael Resnick, a computer teacher, and Mary Ann Larro, a QUEST (character development) teacher.
“Durand TV is a unique opportunity we offer to our students,” said Mrs. Horner. “Mr. Resnick and Mrs. Larro have done a fantastic job. This money is only going to help make our TV show better.”
Overall, Best Buy awarded a $2,500 grant to 1,300 schools to sustain or enhance existing educational programs.
Best Buy started the Teach Award Program in October 2003, to reward schools that creatively integrate interactive technology into their curricula. All accredited, public and private nonprofit elementary, middle and secondary schools located within 50 miles of a Best Buy store were eligible to apply.
“Today, teachers across the country are using technology in new and exciting ways; we want to support and recognize their efforts to engage students and make learning fun," said Paula Prahl, Vice President of Public Affairs for Best Buy. “The Teach Award program helps creative educators enhance their curricula. By committing dollars to the communities in which we work and live, we can more fully support our employees, our customers, and their families.”
