During School Violence Awareness Week (Oct.15-19) Vineland Police officers Luis Quiles and Cathy Stant spoke to students in f
ive history classes at Vineland High School North about safety in our schools, how to prevent violence in their daily lives, and how to make our school and community safer.
The visit was arranged by Sylvia Villar, Student Assistance Counselor at VHS North.
“Throughout the week there were morning announcements about school violence awareness promoting the Campus Anonymous Tip Line,” said Villar. “Students were reminded to reach out to a trusted adult when you know something is wrong or don’t feel safe. The message is --no names, no trouble, just help --- call 856-507-8720.”
Villar said information on conflict resolution, anger management and preventing violence was also provided. Prizes, including “keep the peace” cups, were also handed out.
During Red Ribbon Week (Oct.22-26) students were warned about the dangers of drugs and how to make healthy choices in their lives.
“The students saw a video called ‘Natural High 3’ which promotes doing things that make you feel good and are good for you, not something that can destroy you,” said Villar. “There were also morning announcements with drug facts. Prizes were given out throughout the week for remembering the drug facts and participating in red ribbon activities.
Mrs. Case’s 1st and 6th period science classes helped Villar plant red tulips along the front entrance walkway in celebration of red ribbon week.
“The flowers are a reminder of the beauty of a drug free life,” said Villar. “Students will care for the tulips and hopefully they will bloom in April during alcohol awareness month.”
